Youth Oasis appreciates the generous individuals and groups who volunteer their time to make a difference in the lives of homeless and at-risk youth. Youth Oasis offers three key ways in which volunteers may help transform the lives of vulnerable young people:
Coordinate a Drive Volunteers are needed to raise funds and assemble welcoming kits of essential household items. (Volunteer application and R&R check not required.) Please contact SandyMorgan for information about coordinating a drive. 24/7 Club Raise critical funds to support Youth Oasis programs. Each participant asks 24 people to give $7 each, totaling $168 in gifts. $168 will provide Baton Rouge's homeless youth with ongoing counseling, 8 days of meals, or a bus pass for 3 months. Operation Backpack Imagine living out of one bag as a way of life. Operation Backpack urges members of the community to donate backpacks filled with toiletries and clothing for homeless youth living on the street. Gift cards to stores that sell personal items (CVS, Walmart, Walgreens, etc.) or to fast food establishments such as Subway or McDonald’s are also welcome. Welcome Home Drive Adopt an apartment in our Transitional Living Program and completely make it over. Collect and assemble sets of essential household goods (bedding, towels, toiletries, glasses, flatware, and dishes) for youth. Renovate or coordinate the renovation of the kitchen and bath areas, and generally provide the youth with an apartment they can be proud of and that they deserve. Cardboard City Participants raise a minimum of $50.00 in pledges and contributions and sleep overnight in a cardboard box “home” as a resident of the “City” in order to raise awareness of homeless children in our community. Cardboard City is part of an ongoing effort to promote awareness of homelessness. All proceeds from the overnight event will help Youth Oasis Children’s Shelter further its efforts to assist the homeless at-risk children in our community. Engage Youth Through the Youth Empowerment Program Volunteers are needed to instruct and mentor in the classroom or coordinate hands-on activities. (Volunteer application, orientation, and R&R check required.) Please contact SandyMorgan to volunteer for the Youth Empowerment Program. Organize a field trip Youth Oasis’ clients often have not explored many places of interest in the Greater Baton Rouge area, in large part because of financial constraints. Host a field trip to businesses of note, sporting events, ice- or roller-skating facilities, museums, restaurants, laser tag, plantations, the Capitol, etc. Provide an educational workshop Youth Oasis offers clients a volunteer-run workshop series on career building, personal finance, collegiate opportunities, interviewing skills, anger management, sexual health, nutrition, and other essential areas. Tutor in the classroom Help a student obtain his or her GED by tutoring in reading, writing, math, social studies, or science. Run
